RJC’s John E. Brownlee Building wins BOMA TOBY Award

Edmonton’s John E. Brownlee Building has been awarded the TOBY Award for “Best Government Building” by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of Canada. This prestigious award is recognized in the industry as the most respected and comprehensive program of its kind in the commercial real estate industry, as it showcases quality in commercial buildings and rewards excellence in building management.

For over 30 years RJC Engineers (RJC) has worked on numerous projects within the building, from parkade elevations and mechanical updates to exterior cladding repairs and loading reviews.  RJC has acted as structural engineer for the original build in 1982 and has been continuously engaged to perform improvements and renovations ever since.

Managed by Brookfield GIS and Alberta Infrastructure, the Brownlee Building is home to several Government of Alberta agencies including: Family Justice Services and the Alberta Human Rights Commission.  

The building was previously recognized for its energy conservation initiatives, having earned a BOMA BEST Gold certification earlier this year. The building’s tenants were encouraged to partake in a number of energy saving campaigns including: Earth Hour and National Sweater Day, together with several energy saving projects including switching to LED lighting, the increased use of motion sensors, a blue bin recycling program and the upgrade of HVAC systems, which earned a Clean Air Award from the National Air Filtration Association.
