Congregation Emanu-El Temple was constructed in 1863 by architect John Wright and is a Registered National Historic Site of Canada.

The Temple is the oldest surviving synagogue in Canada and one of the oldest continuously used synagogues in North America.

As part of RJC’s renovation plan, the roof system was seismically upgraded and the asphalt shingle roof was replaced with a hybrid slate roof system.

Original slate found in the attic was used as a sample for colour-matching the original slate used on the Temple.

Additionally, the existing skylight system was replaced with a modern version that more accurately reflected the original pyramid skylight.

The original oculus stained glass window which was in danger of caving in, was also fully disassembled and restored.
